Make Yogurt Your Main Squeeze

From eDiets - The online diet, fitness, and healthy living resource

Have you ever wondered what are some of my criteria for choosing a Best Food?

Foods that are nutritious, convenient, and low in fat and calories certainly top the list, which is why the newest innovation in yogurt is making the cut this week.

Yogurt has been through its share of changes. It’s been frozen, liquefied, blended with everything from fruit to chocolate, and served alongside crunchy toppings. Obviously, some of these “advances” have been better for your waistline than others.

Long regarded as a good-for-you food thanks to its calcium content and live active cultures -- good bacteria that promotes digestive health and stops harmful bacteria in its tracks -- yogurt can miss the boat when it comes to convenience, since it requires a spoon for eating.

So if that’s what has been stopping you from making it an option in your snack repertoire, check out Yoplait Expresse and Stonyfield Farms YoSqueeze in your supermarket’s refrigerator section.

What’s the big news? Both Yoplait and Stonyfield Farms have managed to package yogurt in plastic tubes, so you can grab one of these streamlined containers, tear off the end and eat. Yoplait Expresse comes in four flavor packs: Strawberry, Harvest Peach and Peaches & Cream, Raspberry and Mixed Berry, and Key Lime and Lemon Burst. Stonyfield Farms YoSqueeze is available in Strawberry Stratosphere, Rocket Raspberry/Planetary Punch and Cherry Eclipse/Very Berry Blast.

When it comes to nutrition, both make equally fine snack choices. One tube of Yoplait Expresse strawberry has 70 calories, 1.5 grams of fat and 10 percent of your daily calcium, while YoSqueeze rings in with just 60 calories and 1 gram of fat and 10 percent of calcium for all flavors. Try them frozen, too.

So when you absolutely, positively have to snack on the run and you don’t want to have to squeeze into those jeans, squeeze out a creamy treat for less than 100 calories and bypass the vending machine.
